Chapter

Eleven

Smooshie waddled her way over to me when Parker and I got home. Her swishing tail made it impossible for her to walk a straight line, and I was here for it.

I dropped to squat before my baby girl and wrapped my arms around her. I was rewarded with the top of her skull ramming into my chin.

“Owth.” I moved my head to the side. “You made me bite my tongue.”

Parker shook his head. Elvis was splayed out on the couch. “Don’t get up on my account,” he told his pooch.

Sal and Donna met with Sparrow shortly after Gail and Andi had taken Rosco home. Sparrow and Sal hit it off immediately. The couple were coming by the shelter tomorrow afternoon to pick her up and take her home. All in all, it had been a really good day. Minus the mashing of Martha, of course.

Elvis, who was part Great Dane, whacked his long tail against the armrest on one side of the couch while he craned his head back on the other. Two of the cushions were on the floor, and I shot an accusing look at Smooshie. “Did you do that?”

My question made her even more excited. “I didn’t ask you what you think. I asked you if you did it.”

Parker took his phone off his belt and carried it into the kitchen, where we kept the chargers.

I grabbed mine from my purse and handed it to him as he passed. “Take mine too.”

“You have a message,” he said.

“I didn’t get a notification.” I held the phone up to my face, and the screen unlocked. “It’s from Nadine. She said to call when I got home. She’s coming over with Buzz. They’ll bring dinner.”

“I’m not mad about that,” Parker said. “But tell them to make it dinner for six. I got a text from Dad. He and Reggie are coming over because he wants to talk to you about Martha in person.”

My heart sank. “That’s never a good sign.” Especially if he felt like he needed to bring my bestie as backup. I texted Nadine. Home. Greer and Reggie heading over, too. Bring more grub.

She shot me a thumbs up back.

I glanced at Parker, who had his phone open and was ready to text. “Let your dad know he’s getting fed.”

“Done,” he replied. He held his hand out. I handed him the phone and went into the living room. I hated to disturb Elvis’ beauty sleep, but I made him get up so I could fix the couch. Afterward, I flopped down and put my feet on the coffee table. My ankles were plumper than usual. I’d ask Reggie if there was something I should be doing to keep that from happening.

Parker joined me on the couch, and I tucked my legs under me and curled against him. Goddess, the scent of the man was amazing. Honey and mint. I slid his T-shirt up and buried my face in his chest, rubbing my cheeks against his fur.

He wrapped me in his arms, and I tilted my head back to invite a kiss.
